About this webinar

Human beings are not very good at making decisions — even though we think we are. According to the late Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman, our decision-making processes are “alarmingly contaminated with cognitive biases.” We jump to conclusions because we give too much weight to the information right in front of us while neglecting to consider what is just out of reach. Fortunately, making better decisions is a learnable skill.

In this interactive session, Christa Kirby investigates the difference between a decision and an outcome, as well as our flawed tendency to judge the quality of a decision by how it turns out. We’ll examine the role of luck in decision making, explore techniques that improve your ability to predict a set of possible futures, and walk through concrete actions you can take to combat the four villains of decision making and significantly improve your decision-making process.

What you’ll learn

Decision vs. outcome — what it really means to decide, and how to evaluate a decision separately from how it happens to turn out.

Outcome bias and the spotlight effect — how these cognitive distortions shape the way we judge our own and others’ judgment.

The four villains of decision making — concrete actions for combating each one and building a more deliberate decision-making practice.

Predicting possible futures — techniques that let your decisions account for uncertainty rather than pretend it isn’t there.

The role of luck — how to separate skill from chance when looking back at a decision’s result.

A learnable skill — a practical framework you can take back to your team for raising the quality of decisions across the organization.
