Westinghouse Electric Company

The Challenge:

With tighter budgets, demanding time constraints, and fewer resources, staff needed to be trained in industry-standard project management methods. There was an increasing pressure to complete more projects, so it became critical to do precise project and resource planning to meet company goals; additionally, highly-experienced engineering staff with extensive technical education still needed formal project management training.

CEG Project Management Solution:

  • A customized project management certificate that concentrated on standardizing both the language and the approach to projects, capturing and implementing best practices in project management, improving consistency in project delivery, and providing better management of the project portfolio
  • The curriculum included select modules to cover essential knowledge areas from PMI®‘s PMBOK® Guide and incorporated several days of coaching to support application of the content covered in the program, including mentoring, process documentation review, and facilitated project support
  • Study groups to prepare for the PMI®‘s PMP® Exam
  • Peer checks so that there was a team approach to all project management planning activities

Results:

  • Enhanced competencies that allowed them to better meet their current responsibilities and advance their careers
  • Improved teamwork, especially for those who didn't have much team experience before
  • Use of standardized project management tools and best practices became uniform across the division
  • Noticeable improvements in project scope statements were realized
  • Improved productivity and decreased time to complete projects, which could lead to increased customer satisfaction and sales
